Heat pump plan scrapped by government

In a move that might well surprise many, the government has decided to scrap the Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM). The CHMM was originally meant to start next month, but has been ‘scrapped’ until April 2025 in a bid to protect consumers. But given it was a central plank of the government’s plan to decarbonize UK homes and reach net zero targets by 2050, one must ask why now?

The CHMM was designed to increase uptake of low-carbon heat pumps by fining manufacturers if they missed targets for selling the clean technology, set relative to their boiler sales.

It seems that the government has designed to scrap the plan for now, due to warnings that heat pump installations are already off track. Boiler manufacturers had criticised the CHMM due to the fear that it will push up costs for consumers.
Such is the concern that Energy Minister Graham Stuart considered resigning from the government according to The Times.
