The many lies of Exurb1a

What do you do if you’re a YouTuber who likes to think he’s a big thinker?

Well, if you’re Exurb1a, you lull women into a false sense of security with you by telling them a whole lot of lies and then once you’ve done that, you get them to agree to an experiment, which you then use to psychologically torture them until they’re so vulnerable, you can do whatever you want to them.

What exactly am I referring to? I’m referring to Experiment A, the experiment that Exurb1a, otherwise known as Alex, conducted on Pieke Roelofs, a woman that he met via YouTube and contacted via Skype soon afterwards. The experiment was to keep note of different events or synchronicities that happened around Pieke. A Synchronicity is the occurrence of two or more, non-causally related events that coincide in a way that is deeply meaningful to the observer, and as such, was something of an obsession of Alex’s, as the man thought he was the next Carl Jung.

At first, as Pieke has noted elsewhere, the synchronicities seemed to be organically occurring. It was only after they stopped communicating that she was able to truly notice that what she thought were random occurrences were actually well-coordinated events mapped out by Alex, to both scare her and force her to further trust him. Almost, as if these things were occurring whenever they spoke.

Eventually, it got to the point where Pieke barely trusted her own eyes and intuition and Alex swooped in trying to take advantage of her. This led to a series of events that ended with Pieke going to the police to report Alex for a series of despicable crimes, sexual assault foremost amongst them.

In her hunt for justice and the truth, Pieke has spoken to several people over the years and over the course of her discussions and research has found-with the help of many journalists such as myself- a great number of discrepancies in what Alex told her.

These discrepancies include claiming to have done some work for CERN; no such work had ever been done, as confirmed by CERN. He also claimed to be doing a PHD in Sofia, Bulgaria, however, the professor who chaired the department under which his PHD would fall, stated that Alex had not even completed his masters, let alone a PHD.

Women who’d known Alex in the past had reached out to Pieke to talk about the horrors he’d put them through or that they knew he’d inflicted on others. Through their testimonies we were able to identify consistent behaviour he has shown for years revolving around seeking power over women. This included gaslighting, verbal abuse, cruel bullying of a singled out individual in a group setting and sexual assault. Alcohol was mentioned at times as a strong influence on this behaviour.

During my own investigation, I reached out to representatives of noted British comic, Stephen Fry, to examine the claims Alex had made that Fry’s agent had reached out to him to do some collaboration. Those representatives were very quick to disprove Alex’s claims categorically stating that ‘no record ever exists of any communication with a man by that name, nor would such communication be made’. Another lie exposed.

Furthermore, after a comprehensive review of Skype messages, Whatsapp audio messages  and text messages between Pieke and Alex, alongside messages between Alex and several other women, a clear pattern emerged. Alex would appear to get to know these women, their foibles, their interests, their worries and then he would portray himself as someone who could be their protector and their saviour. But only if they followed him on whatever garden path he wished to take them down.

Often in the course of this, he would say things like. “One day you will see through the pattern and when you do, I know you can’t love me anymore.” Something he said to Pieke in the summer of 2016, no doubt testing her loyalty and whether she was truly hooked. Earlier women would eventually be ditched once they had run their course, or they had gotten tired of Alex, but not before he had left a mental scar that many of them still had. With one woman saying after learning another girl had shared her story with Pieke: “Give my best to the new member of our sad sisterhood.”

Pieke’s breaking point came after Alex revealed how much of a monster he was and attacked her, once when she was in hospital, trying to recover from the harm he had done to her.

Even now, it seems as though Alex has not completely let go of Pieke. One of his most recent videos seemingly echoes a video she did, and contains subtle hints and winks toward it, including the main protagonist apologising to another character using metaphors that Pieke once said she’d have liked Alex to have used. This seems particularly prevalent in Exurb1a’s video ‘Losing You’ which appears to be the ‘Blue is a Wave,’ song Pieke requested in her poem ‘Slow Death’. One he supposedly had to sing once he would ask for forgiveness.  A spooky coincidence or a man stating that he has indeed seen her video and is following her life.

All of this to say that Alex or Exurb1a is a dangerous man, a man who believes that the people he has harmed are but characters in the story of his life. Characters who can be manipulated, abused and then consumed in his art so he can profit from their pain. Furthermore, the question of whether Alex can ever actually experience shame and or regret for his actions is something that remains to be answered. After she became aware of his Losing You video, Pieke made it clear that she was willing to hear him out and for him to apologise to her and yet, as of writing, Alex has not taken her up on this more than generous offer.
